Welcome to Stories of Grace and Grit

Welcome to Stories of Grace and Grit. I’m Butch Mullis. I write books that confront the darkness, reveal God’s grace in hard times, and help readers find purpose in the middle of the fight. Join me for fresh essays, behind‑the‑scenes moments, and the stories that deepen spiritual growth and anchor our identity in Christ.

I write to make sense of the quiet, often difficult spaces we inhabit, the places where struggle meets grace. I’ve been sitting with this piece for a while, exploring how we build resilience in the dark. I’d love to share it with you and see if these themes resonate with your own experience.

The Architecture of Scars

"To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified."  Isaiah 61:3

The woodstove in the corner was a demanding presence, hungry for the last of my dry logs. Outside, the wind was tearing at the cabin siding—a persistent, jagged sound that mimicked the dissonance of a life lived in uncertainty. But as I placed the wood into the hearth, I looked at the gray remains of the previous night’s fire and saw something other than waste. I saw the promise of beauty for ashes.

People often speak of "grit" as if it were a muscle we cultivate through sheer human willpower. But in the cathedral-like silence of that cabin, the truth settled over me like dust motes in a shaft of light: my grit is not my own. It is a holy stewardship. When I am at my weakest, when the howling winds of life threaten to unmake me, it is the immovable, hushed presence of the Divine that becomes the iron in my spine.

My faith does not offer a reprieve from the storm, nor does it guarantee that the fire will never run low. It offers something far more profound: the assurance that I am never standing in the dark alone.

As the first amber flames caught the wood, casting long, liturgical shadows against the cedar walls, I felt the heavy, sacred calm of grace. It was the sudden, piercing realization that my struggles are not chaotic debris; they are the refining fire. Every scar I carry is not merely a mark of injury, but a deliberate chisel mark—proof that the Creator has been laboring over the architecture of my soul, meticulously transforming the raw, jagged ruins of my past into a sanctuary capable of housing His peace.

I did not need to be strong enough to survive the night on my own. I only needed to be willing to surrender to the One who was already there, inhabiting the shadows, waiting for the light to return.

My Books

Every story I write digs into the moments that define our Christian identity, the struggles that stretch our spiritual resilience, and the grace that helps us find purpose in the fire. These are the stories of grace and grit I’ve shared so far.:

The Ripple Effects Series

Where the choices we make today create Ripples that reach further than we can imagine.

The Ripple Effects (Book 1)

Every life is shaped by moments most people never notice.

A conversation you didn’t think mattered.
A choice you made without thinking twice.
A person who showed up at the right, or wrong time.

It’s a reminder that no life is fixed, no mistake is final, and no ripple is without purpose.

Because the next ripple you create… could change everything.

The Ripple Effects of Fire and Flood (Book 2)

When the effects of the dual disaster hit, we often experience what looks like spiritual bankruptcy. We feel numb, unable to pray, and paralyzed by the weight of the wreckage. We look at our broken finances, our fractured families, or our failing health, and we wonder how a loving God could allow both the levy to break and the spark to ignite at the exact same moment.

Stand alone Fiction Title:

Trapped at Anna Ruby Falls

Arthur and Martha just wanted a simple day trip to enjoy God's creation at Anna Ruby Falls. But a sudden, violent storm turns their peaceful outing into a fight for their lives. With the trails washed away and the temperature dropping fast, their human plans and preparations are pushed to the limit. Arthur is a man who prepares for the worst-especially with Type 1 diabetes. His pack holds the tools to survive. But his wife, Martha, is hiding a secret: a heart condition that requires medication miles away in their car. As the storm rages and hope fades, they discover that when our strength is gone and our plans fall apart, we can still hold on to the One who never leaves us.

I have an upcoming release that I'm very happy to announce. It should be complete by the fall. It's a story about the life of King David, the title is, "God's Warrior UNARMORED". Once it is completed you will be able to get if off the book shelf of Amazon.

Under the open sky, with firelight flickering against the night, a call goes out to every heart willing to listen. This gathering isn’t about spectacle,  it’s about awakening. A preacher stands at the pulpit, Bible open, voice steady and urgent, reminding us that the message has never changed: Jesus is coming soon.

In a world full of noise, this moment cuts through with clarity. People bow their heads, not out of ritual, but out of longing, longing for truth, for hope, for the presence of God that meets us wherever we are. This is true revival in its purest form: simple, sincere, and burning with expectation.
